Funeral
service for Samuel Eugene Sharper, Sr.; who died, November 15, 2010
will be Saturday, November 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Stewart Memorial
United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Maxine Thompson, officiating and
Rev. Dr. Silas M'Mworia delivering the words of comfort. Service of
committal and burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Calling hours
will be on Friday (today), November 26, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
at Herbert Thompson Funeral Home. Samuel Eugene Sharper, Sr., the fifth
child of Willie Lee and Arliva Sharper entered this world on March 19,
1934. In 1956 he married Juanita Smith. They were the proud parents of
nine children, and were blessed with four surrogate children. Sam joined
the Christian Fellowship of Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church in
the 1970's under Rev. Dr. Roger P. Fair, Sr. He dedicated his life and
service to God and Jesus Christ. Sam was always devoted to every task
and did it with a smile. He was always ready to lend a helping hand
whenever asked. He served as the Church School Superintendent, a Sunday
School Teacher, and as the Church Treasurer. Sam was educated at Bonner
Elementary School, Campbell Elementary, and Campbell Street High School.
He attended Bethune-Cookman University with a major in mathematics, and
a minor in chemistry. He furthered his studies toward a master's degree
at Buffalo University in Buffalo, New York. Sam served in the United
States Army.
He was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Screaming Eagles as
Specialist 4th Class at Fort Bragg, South Carolina. Sam was an
instructor in the Volusia County School System for over 30 years, and
was honored by his students and colleagues. His dedication and positive
attitude was an inspiration to all. Sam left this life on November 15,
2010 after a brief illness. Even in his last moments, Sam maintained his
positive attitude and humor. He was pre-deceased by one son Roderic
Sharper, one surrogate daughter Jolita Payne, five brothers: Calvin,
James, Issac, Nathaniel, and Theodore, two sisters: Francelia, and
Marlene. Left to mourn are his beloved wife Juanita; three brothers:
Willie Sharper, Jr., John Sharper, and Kenneth(Louella) Sharper, Sr.;
two sisters: Arlivia Robinson, and Elnora Jackson, all of Daytona Beach;
three sister-in-laws: Mildred Sharper, Sarah Sharper, and Emma Jean
Sharper; four sons: Samuel(Betty) Sharper, Jr., Richmond,VA.,
Brian(Tanisha) Sharper, Atlanta, GA, Geoffrey(Tonya) Sharper, Midway,
FL., Allen Sharper of Tallahassee, FL.; four daughters: Sherry Sharper,
Lydia(Gregory) Dukes, of Aurora, IL, Pamela(Furman) Clark, Lakeland,
FL., Elaine(Joseph) Brown, Daytona Beach, FL.; Three surrogate children:
Janette Payne, Ruth Payne, Franklin Payne; Twelve grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
